Calgary Indigenous STEAM Students Association (CISSA) is a student association at the University of Calgary dedicated to promoting Indigenous engagement in STEAM fields. By facilitating learning opportunities, providing professional development, and fostering a sense of community among Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, CISSA is playing a vital role in advancing diversity and inclusion in the STEAM fields.

One of the key initiatives of CISSA is its mentorship program, which aims to build a strong internal community of Indigenous STEAM students. By pairing students with mentors who can provide guidance and support, CISSA is helping to create a network of support for Indigenous students pursuing careers in STEAM. This mentorship program not only fosters academic and professional development but also serves as a platform for sharing cultural knowledge and traditions, enriching the overall university experience for Indigenous students. In addition to the mentorship program, CISSA organizes social and cultural events that celebrate Indigenous heritage and provide opportunities for students to connect outside of the classroom. These events not only foster a sense of belonging for Indigenous students but also help to create a more inclusive campus community for all students. By promoting collaboration and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, CISSA is building bridges and breaking down barriers in the STEAM fields. Furthermore, CISSA is actively involved in promoting mentorship and collaboration with the external community to create a welcoming environment for incoming and prospective Indigenous STEAM students. By partnering with local organizations and industry professionals, CISSA is working to create a safer and more supportive space for Indigenous students entering the STEAM fields. Through these collaborations, CISSA is helping to ensure that Indigenous students have the resources and support they need to succeed in their academic and professional endeavors. Overall, CISSA is making a significant impact in promoting Indigenous engagement in STEAM fields in Calgary. Through its mentorship program, social and cultural events, and external collaborations, CISSA is providing valuable support and opportunities for Indigenous students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. By fostering a sense of community, promoting diversity and inclusion, and empowering Indigenous students to succeed, CISSA is helping to build a more equitable and diverse STEAM community in Calgary and beyond.

We would like to acknowledge that our University is located on Treaty 7 Territory, which is the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy, comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations; the Tsuut’ina First Nation; and the Stoney Nakoda, which includes the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations. Treaty 7 is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta – Calgary Nose Hill & Calgary Elbow Métis District.

On this land and in this place, we strive to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing and being, as well as traditional knowledge into each discipline of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) so that we can learn, walk, and grow together in a good way.
