Indigenous STEM students often face unique challenges and barriers as they pursue their academic and professional goals. Recognizing the importance of providing support and guidance to these students, the Calgary Indigenous STEAM Students Association (CISSA) has established a mentorship program aimed at empowering Indigenous students in STEM and Arts fields.

Mentorship is a powerful tool that can make a significant difference in the lives of students. By connecting aspiring Indigenous STEAM students with experienced mentors who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement, CISSA aims to foster a sense of community and belonging within the Indigenous student population. Through this mentorship program, students can access valuable resources, develop essential skills, and build meaningful connections that can help them succeed in their academic and professional pursuits. In addition to the mentorship program, CISSA also organizes social and cultural events to create a supportive and inclusive environment for Indigenous STEAM students. By celebrating Indigenous culture and traditions, the association seeks to promote a sense of pride and belonging among its members. These events not only provide students with an opportunity to connect with their peers but also help them embrace their identity and heritage. Furthermore, CISSA actively promotes mentorship and collaboration with the external community to create a welcoming and inclusive space for incoming and prospective Indigenous STEAM students. By partnering with local organizations and industry professionals, CISSA aims to provide valuable networking opportunities, internship programs, and career development resources to its members. Through these collaborations, Indigenous students can gain access to a wide range of opportunities that can help them advance in their academic and professional journey. Overall, CISSA is committed to empowering Indigenous STEAM students and providing them with the support, guidance, and resources they need to succeed. By fostering a sense of community, celebrating Indigenous culture, and promoting mentorship and collaboration, CISSA is making a meaningful impact in the lives of Indigenous students in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We would like to acknowledge that our University is located on Treaty 7 Territory, which is the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy, comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations; the Tsuut’ina First Nation; and the Stoney Nakoda, which includes the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations. Treaty 7 is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta – Calgary Nose Hill & Calgary Elbow Métis District.

On this land and in this place, we strive to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing and being, as well as traditional knowledge into each discipline of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) so that we can learn, walk, and grow together in a good way.
